King of the reverse jinx

I think the texans should start paying me to bad mouth them. each time I have the have come back and won the next week. This last week against the colts.

My family has this saying about me...never sit next to me at a blackjack table. In fact one year we were in new mexico and Jodi actually physically forced me to leave the table. Another time in vegas, I was with at least 5 members of my family at a craps table...played for about 40 minutes. We all started together and ended together. After we were done everyone talleyed their winnings...execept for me who had somehow lost while everyone else had won.

I guess the moral to the story is if you want something to happen let me say it won't and don't ever gamble with me in your company.

Musings

the title of book 7 was confirmed today...harry potter and the deathly hallows. sounds sinister. i hope she doesn't end up killing off harry. i don't know if i could take it.

if you want to play a game of hangman to figure out the title check out mugglenet link to the right.

cover story today on espn.com about the education of vince young. makes me want to puke that he is not a texan. plus a rumor in the chronicle that the texans may look to trade carr and get matt schaub from atlanta. let's see schaub vs. young...hummm.

check out this link from mike copes blog from a few days back. item number three is interesting and a hot topic at our house (not a new topic a hot one). something to chew on a bit. it seems to me that lots of churches tend to call themselves progressive but when you look in it is the same old core with a shiny new outer coat - nothing really has changed once you take off the coat. i also wish i studied more so i could actually talk with confidence. and it seems to me there is no middle ground either. as the kid's dad so elequantly put it, if you have a band why not have a keg...

The non-christmas christmas

this year it just hasn't felt like christmas. maybe because there have been santa claus signs since before thanksgiving, maybe because it was 80 degrees this weekend or maybe because I haven't done a lick of christmas shopping and it is dec 20 or maybe because i feel swamped at work or once I am home I feel like I am always racing to catch up.

whatever it is I am looking forward to the actual day of christmas. because being with family and seeing molly and jack open presents will make it feel like christmas no matter what else is going on in the world around me.

today I visted a friend who's son named Ryan has been in cook children's for 8 weeks this friday. Ryan has a long road ahead recovering from a serious brain injury, but he has made significant progress. Visting Ryan was a stark reminder that it is hard not to get caught up in the world around us...but the people that are dear to us are what matters.

To my family I look forward to seeing everyone and hugging your necks over christmas. To my dear friends - many of whom I don't see or talk to near enough - please know that I think of you often and hope you get to enjoy the company of the ones you hold dear this christmas day.

Merry Christmas!

Worst Team Ever - Part 2

Saw this little tidbit from the elias sports bureau today:

"The Lions' loss was their 71st over the last six seasons, the second-highest six-year total in NFL history. But with only two weeks remaining in the NFL season, the record is safe for now. The Bucs lost 74 games from 1983 through 1988."

Let's review our venerable Houston Texans shall we...

2002: 4-12
2003: 5-11
2004: 7-9
2005: 2-14
2006: 4-10 (through 14 games)

I say they lose to Indy, but I am going to give the old texans the benefit of the doubt and say they will beat cleveland on the last day of the year to end up 5-11 for 2006.

That would give the texans 57 losses. 58 if they end up losing both. If Detroit loses out they would have 73 losses over 6 years. As mentioned above Tampa Bay had 74.

If the texans lose out and have 58 losses then they can only tie this mark of futility by going 0-16 in 2007. So Tampa's record here is safe. It is almost as hard to go 0-16 as it is to go 16-0. Just look at the lions and raiders this year or texans last year...each figured out a way to win 2 games - who knows how.

Let's see how the lions end up, but it will be hard for the Texans to match even their suckyness. So with this years performance I think the lions have solidified themselves as the worst team of the Texans era so far.

But crazier things have happened...maybe the Texans can figure out a way to be historically bad.

On a related note, how much of a stomach punch was it to see Vince Young just roll over his hometown team. The 2006 NFL draft will be a day that long lives in infamy for Houston fans. Whether mario williams turns out to be the next coming of Lawrence Taylor (unlikely) or just the next coming of simeon rice (even that would be nice) he will never be Reggie Bush or VY. I liked Bush once the texans picked up Carr's option and said they were out on VY. I figured Bush could do nothing but help the offense here. And seeing the Texans backfield he would have been a HUGE upgrade. But I don't see why they still could have picked up Carr's option and rolled the dice on VY. If nothing else you trade him (or Carr) down the road. All VY does is win football games. And what a story it would have made. Hometown product, comes back to reclaim glory for downtrodden expansion team. It made so much sense of course they didn't do it.

Amazing Race Update

I lost steam on updating the amazing race...but unlike studio sixty (which didn't make it to the DVR series recordings and because it didn't was not watched at all after the pilot episode - which I liked. if anyone is watching this give me some feedback if I should jump back in) I have continued to watch week to week and it is still the most entertaining show I watch.

Having said that...the episodes haven't had the same spark as the first ones where they just drove me to blog on them. That and I have been a lazy blogger.

Let me sum up the episodes from 3 until 12. The six pack was a drag and everyone hates blondes. So the geographic teams (Alabama and Kentucky) and the cho bros all teamed up and began to just whip us with team attitude. To the point where it was only a matter of time until they started dropping like flies because they were all so weak.

But low and behold...once free of the six pack, team Alabama has begun to assert themselves and is now the first all female team to have a shot at winning the amazing race. If last year is any indication, it isn't necessarily about brawn in winning the prize. So I am thinking they have a pretty good shot at getting this done.

But the team everyone thought would be the first all female team to win the amazing race - the beauty queen blondes - didn't make the cut. I think they were smart and they were athletic, but their downfall was their pride. They didn't actually think that a team like Alabama could beat them and then they made a crucial mistake - of course it involved driving and that got them put in last place. Then in last nights episode they finally picked a detour that didn't pan out and ended up in last place and out of the race.

So now we have two moms from Alabama, the dysfunctional dating couple who will be in marriage counseling at best and divorced at worst in 5 years, and Zoolander and Hansel vying for the $1 million prize.

If pressed to make a pick I am going to go with Zoolander and Hansel, because I think they will break out Blue Steel and turn left just when they need too.

And if you go back and check my earlier posts I was high on this team from the beginning and did think that the one-legged runner would falter along the way. Although I thought that Kimberly would have already left Rob at this point...but hey I guess a million can keep you together.
